US military kills 6 Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia

Mogadishu, Jan 10 (IANS) The US military on Wednesday said its special forces conducted an airstrike against Al-Shabaab terrorists in Somalia on Tuesday, killing six militants.

The US Africa Command (Africom) said the airstrike, which was conducted in cooperation with Somali government, targeted an Al-Shabaab encampment in the vicinity of Yaaq Braawe, Bay region, Xinhua reported.

"The Al-Shabaab encampment served as a staging area for terrorists in the region. We currently assess this airstrike killed six militants and destroyed one vehicle," Africom said in a statement.

The US Army, which has increased airstrikes in the Horn of Africa nation in the recent past, said no civilians were injured or killed in the latest airstrike.

The US forces alongside Somali and African Union forces have increased ground and air offensives against the militant group Al-Shabaab in the last few months.
