7/1/1947Amarsingh, Rajput king of Mewar, was born.
4/9/1965Fighting breaks out in the Rann of Kutch between Indian and Pakistani troops. Pakistan attacked Indian borders, Sardar Post, Chhar Bet and Beria Bet, this was manned by the State Armed Police Batallions. In Kutch launched its 8th Infantry Division supported by two regiments of M47/48 Pattons. Operation 'Desert Hawk' was launched to draw away reserves from other vulnerable areas, and possibly to test India's resolve. The Indian Army did not rise to the bait.
12/27/1975A coal-mine was exploded at Chasnala mine near Dhanbad. It was India's worst coal mine disaster.
3/4/1925Jyotirindranath Tagore, great Bengali litterateur and poet, passed away.

2/1/1901Six language penel were started on the Rs. five dinomination. These notes were single sided and the back side could be used for accounting purposes. The six languages were Urdu, Bengali, Telugu, Kaithi, Kannada and Tamil. The paper used for printing was white hand made and moulded.
8/3/1886Maithili Sharan Gupta, first man of modern Hindi poetry and literature, writer, patriot and social worker, was born at Chirgaon village near Jhansi.
